Art. I §7 | ADVISORY NEIGHBORHOOD COMMISSIONS

a. The Legislative Assembly shall by Act divide the State of Washington, D.C. into neighborhood commission areas, which areas shall be represented by an elected advisory neighborhood commission. Members of each advisory neighborhood commission shall be known as Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners and shall be elected from a single-member district on a nonpartisan basis.

b. No person shall hold the office of Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner unless that person:
(1) is domiciled in the State of Washington, D.C. and resides in the singlemember district from which that person is nominated;

(2) is a qualified voter of the State of Washington, D.C.; and

(3) has resided and been domiciled in the State of Washington, D.C. for 1 year immediately preceding the day on which the general or special election for such office is to be held.
c. Each advisory neighborhood commission may:
(1) advise the Legislative Assembly and the Executive Branch on matters of public policy, which advice shall be given great weight;

(2) employ staff and expend public funds as authorized by the annual budget for the State of Washington, D.C. for public purposes within its neighborhood commission area; and

(3) have such other advisory powers and responsibilities as the Legislative Assembly may establish by Act.
d. An Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner shall not be compensated in excess of actual expenses incurred in connection with the discharge of his or her duties.
